Merano

The Merano research pilot focuses on testing how cargo bikes can be seamlessly integrated into the city’s existing bike-sharing system, with the goal of offering greener, more inclusive delivery and collection services. As part of this effort, the pilot will implement a digital booking system for cargo bikes and run real-world trials to evaluate user experience and logistics. A central element of the pilot is a collaboration with a local commercial activity, which will use the Fix bike-delivery service to deliver regional products in a more sustainable way. This initiative highlights the environmental benefits of switching from conventional delivery methods to cargo bikes, aiming to reduce urban traffic congestion and emissions. Local retailers will actively participate by offering customers a choice between green delivery options and traditional methods, ensuring that the service remains inclusive for different user groups. This dual approach helps assess the acceptance and impact of more sustainable last-mile delivery solutions.

To support this effort, the pilot will also identify and evaluate potential locations for cargo bike collection stations, with a particular focus on the Maia Bassa/Untermais neighborhood. Here, a prototype station will be developed not only as a functional pick-up point for deliveries but also as a community hub—a welcoming space designed for social interaction, cultural exchange, and neighborhood engagement.

What makes this station special is its participatory design process: the layout and functions will be co-created with the local community and stakeholders, ensuring that the space meets real needs and reflects shared values. A strong emphasis will be placed on accessibility and attractiveness, especially for people with disabilities, making the pilot a model of inclusive urban design.

This pilot is part of a broader effort under the Move 2 Cargo campaign, initiated by südtirolmobil, which promotes the integration of cargo bikes into everyday mobility and delivery services across South Tyrol. The campaign supports municipalities, logistics providers, and local businesses in shifting to low-emission transport methods.

Move to Cargo project

Move 2 Cargo emphasizes the long-term environmental and social benefits of cargo bike logistics. It offers tailored support to test and scale solutions like cargo bike-sharing systems, delivery hubs, and incentives for businesses adopting sustainable logistics. By aligning mobility innovation with climate goals, the campaign strengthens South Tyrol’s commitment to smarter, greener transport infrastructure.

The Merano research pilot is a concrete, hands-on example of this regional vision in action—demonstrating how urban space can be reimagined to support not only cleaner transport but also stronger community connections.
